Parents, whose child is either a permanent Australian residence or an Australian citizen, are eligible to migrate to Australia under this visa program. A person can apply for parent visa under two categories, which are described in details below:

Parent Category
A parent, who wants to migrate to Australia under this category, has to be sponsored by his/her child. However, the child has to be a permanent residence of Australia, an Australian citizen or a New Zealand citizen.
Here are some of the questions pertained to parent migration visa that one should remain aware of to avoid any kind of legal complications:

Q: How can I stay with my child who lives permanently in Australia?
Parents, who wish to migrate to Australia to live with their child, can apply for a visa under any of these two categories: The Contributory Parent category and the Parent category. However, in order to qualify their child should be either an Australian permanent resident or an Australian Citizen.

Q: What are the major differences between the Contributory Parent category and the Parent category?
There are more visa places available under the Contributory Parent category than parent visa category.
Parents, who are applying for a visa under contributory parent category, are willing to contribute to their welfare cost as well as their future health costs. However, this is not the case with Parent Category.

Q: How much does it cost to apply for a Contributory Parent Visa?
Obtaining Contributory Parent Visa is certainly expensive than Parent category visa. An applicant has to pay a larger Assurance of Support as well as a higher visa application charges in order to qualify under Contributory Parent Visa program.

A candidate should withdraw his/her previous application if the Department has not made any decision on it. It will make ones application acceptable to the designated authority.

Contributory Parent
This category was first introduced in 2003 to allow parents, who can afford to pay a large Assurance of Support as well as a higher visa application charge, to migrate to Australia.

Under Contributory Parent category, four sub categories are described in detail below:

Parents residing outside Australia
Parents, who are living outside Australia, are eligible to apply under any of these sub categories:

- Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa
- Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa

However, applicants have to make sure that they are sponsored by their child, who has to be an Australian permanent resident, Australian citizen or an eligible citizen of New Zealand.

Parents residing in Australia
Parents, who are residing in Australia, are eligible to apply for Contributory parent visa under any of the below mentioned sub categories:

- Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa
- Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Visa

In order to obtain visa under these categories, candidates need the meet the age limit as set by the authority. Candidates, whose profiles do not match the age requirement, have to apply to the Perth Offshore Parents Centre (POPC) to obtain a subclass 173 Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa or a subclass 143 Contributory Parent visa. However, candidates, who are barred from lodging an application, are not allowed to apply for this temporary visa program.

Moreover, candidates should remain aware of the fact that they will not be able to apply for associated Bridging Visa while their applications are being processed by POPC.

Temporary Visas in the Contributory Parent Category
A parent can apply for either a temporary or a permanent visa to elongate his stay in Australia. Maximum validity of a temporary Contributory Parent visa is 2 years and this cannot be extended further. After obtaining this visa, a candidate will be eligible to work legally in Australia and to access Medicare facilities.

A temporary visa holder can apply for corresponding permanent Contributory Parent Visa during his/her two years’ stay in Australia.
