An Australian Student Visa allows people who are not Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents, to study in Australia and undertake a registered course.
 
Basic Requirements
There are certain requirements like health, character, age, accommodation and outstanding debts, which need to be looked into.
 
A) Health and Character - Candidates who apply under the student visa category must be in good health and of good character. Candidates must ensure that they fulfil the requirements of their course, including attendance and must only work in Australia where express permission is granted.
 
B) Outstanding Debts - The applicant should by no means have any outstanding debt to the Commonwealth of Australia. 
 
C) Age and Accommodation - If the candidates are under the age of 18, they should be able to look after themselves including their accommodation, food, living and social welfare needs.
 
Conditions of Visa
There are certain conditions, which every student who migrates to study in Australia should fulfil. 
 
A) Registered Course - They should be enrolled only into registered courses and colleges. Only those courses, which are registered under the Commonwealth Register of Institutions, and Courses for Overseas Students are considered valid.
 
B) Attendance - The candidate must fulfil the minimum level of attendance that the college seeks from every student.
 
C) Grant of Visa - The candidate must satisfy all the requirements in order to be granted the student visa. 
D) Health Insurance - The students must arrange for health insurance.
 
Student Visa Sub Classes
There are various student visa divided under various sub classes. 
 
Independent ELICOS Visa- Subclass 570
This category of visa is especially for people who would be studying under the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students program. 
 
A) Courses that lead to Certificate I, II, III, IV - The course under the Independent ELICOS Visa is actually for those courses which gives the student Certificate I, II, III, IV. 
 
B) Courses that lead to no formal Australian award - The applicants would get such a visa, if they applied for a course, which does not grant an Australian degree.
 
C) Study and live in Australia as long as you are enrolled in course - As long as the student is enrolled in the course, they can study and live at the same time.  
 
D) 20 hours per week during the course session - They are allowed to work for 20 hours a week, while you are into your course. 
 
E) Unlimited Hours during scheduled breaks - One can work for as many hours one wants during the course breaks. 
 
F) Financial Requirements - The students need to have enough money to look after themselves in the country during their stay.
 
School Visa Sub Class 571
A) Primary School Course - The school visa is actually given to applicants who are looking to pursue primary school course. 
 
B) Higher secondary or secondary course - The student visa is also given to applicants who want to go ahead with a higher secondary education. 
 
C) Approved secondary school exchange program - Such a visa is also permissible for students applying for an approved secondary school exchange program. 
 
D) Study and live in Australia for as long as you are enrolled  - Anyone who comes to study in Australia can stay and live in the country only until the time the course is not finished. 
 
E) 20 hours per week during the course session  - Again, one is allowed to work 20 hours a week, during the course.
 
F) Unlimited Hours during scheduled breaks - The student can work for as many hours as they want during the session breaks. 
 
G) Financial Requirements - The students would have to look after their basic needs to lead a normal life in the country.
 
Vocational Education and Training (VNET) Subclass 572
A) A certificate I, II, III, IV - This type of visa is specially designed for people who are pursuing courses, which offer, Certificate I, II, III, and IV. 
 
B) A Diploma - Australian government grants visa under subclass 572 for students who are opting for a diploma course. 
 
C) Advanced Diploma - As the name suggests the students, who have applied for advanced diploma can also apply under such a visa. 
 
D) Vocational Graduate Certificate - Some institutes offer vocational graduate certificate and students can apply for Subclass 572 for a visa. 
 
E) Vocational Graduate Diploma - Vocational graduate diploma students can also be eligible for this type of visa. 
 
F) Duration - The student visa for Australia covers your time in Australia to learn, but no longer. The length of time is estimated how long you will require to complete your degree or classes as well as to graduate. You are permitted to come to Australia up to three months before your course officially starts.
 
G) 20 hours per week while you are enrolled in the course - One can work for twenty hours in a week during course period. 
 
H) Unlimited Hours during Scheduled course breaks - The student however is allowed to work full time during course breaks.
 
I) Financial Requirements - The personal financial requirements of the student have to be looked after by the students themselves. 
 
Higher Education Sub Class 573
As the name suggest the Subclass 573 provides education at the university level. There are various courses for students to choose from. 
 
Education
The education system is divided into various blocks in the higher education class. 
One can opt for a Bachelor’s Degree in his or her preferred subject. 
One can be enrolled into an associate degree course program.
One can even try for a graduation certificate
Some students opt for graduate diploma courses. 
Some students go ahead with their masters by course works. 
 
Conditions of Work
The student can work for a maximum period of twenty hours per week during the time his college is open or during the course semester.  
The student can work for as many hours as he wants once he or she has completed the semester or when there is a gap between the colleges reopening day. 
 
Duration
The student who comes to pursue higher studies in Australia is allowed to stay in Australia only until the time the course is not completed. The candidate also has to have a satisfactory attendance record. There are certain courses, which does not a permit a student to stay back or apply for an extension, even after the course is completed. 
 
Financial Requirements
The student has to have the financial support from their families to support them during their stay in Australia. They have to look after their social welfare on their own. 
 
Post Graduate Research Sub Class 574
This visa is meant for students who come to Australia to practice higher studies, which might be a Masters degree or a doctoral degree. 
 
Duration - The duration of such visa is only valid until the time the course is not completed. The immigration department would only consider registered courses to a valid reason for grant of such a visa. 
 
Condition of Work - The students can work part time in Australia to make money. They are allowed to work for 20 hours a week maximum, while the educational session is on. They are allowed to work full time, when the session is off for a break. 
 
Financial Requirement - The student has to have a sound financial back up support to live in Australia. They have to look after their own social needs. 
 
Non Award Sub Class 575
As the name would suggest, this visa is for those students who would wish to study may be a non-awarded foundation study or may be a course, which has no Australian award after completion. 
 
Course
- There are two types of courses under such a visa. 
- One might apply for a non-awarded foundation course in Australia. 
- One might even apply for a full time course, on completion of which no award is given in Australia. 
 
Duration
Under such a visa, the student who lives in Australia to pursue higher studies can only reside in the country as long as the course is not completed. The course should also be registered by the authorities. 
 
Condition of Work
Any student who comes to study in Australia can work for extra money both during the semesters and after the semester. During the semesters, the student can work for a maximum hourly limit of 20 hours per week. During the semester breaks, on can work for as many hours as he or she wants. 
 
Financial Requirement
The student should be able to carry out his own liabilities during the stay in Australia. Social welfare needs must be looked after by the student themselves.
