The government of Australia has a unique and fully modernized medical treatment system made for the common people of the country. This national healthcare program is better known as Medicare.

Enrolling in the Medicare Program
Every migrant can apply for Medicare after a period of seven days. Once they meet all the requirements, they can get Medicare facilities with a card. The Medicare facility shall not include emergency ambulance service. Ambulance service is provided free by the Australian government. Once the migrant meets the requirements a Welcome kit that has all the information explained is provided.

Private Health Insurance
One can also buy a Medical Health Insurance Policy from the various companies available in the market. Anyone who has a Medicare card can apply for a health insurance. The federal government provides a 30 % rebate on health insurance premiums. This rebate is however only to Australian residents having a Medicare card.

Getting Treatment
Anyone can be treated in the various medical centres around the city for emergency treatments. The white pages telephone directory has listed all the names and number of the hospitals. The patient should carry the Medicare card if one needs to be treated in any of the listed hospitals. One needs to visit a general or family doctor first and only then can one be referred to a senior medical specialist.
