The print and broadcast media of Canada is very active. Two national newspapers in Canada are published daily. Localized editions of national papers are also available at the provinces and territories of the country. Each of the provinces and territories individually bring out their local editions of newspapers. In Canada, interest based and community based newspapers are also very popular.

Some of the popular newspapers of Canada are:

a) The Globe and Mail: This English newspaper is published daily from Toronto and is distributed across the country. This broadsheet is printed in six cities of Canada. After the Toronto Star, this newspaper is considered the second largest newspaper that is distributed on a daily basis. This national newspaper is also considered the largest circulated paper in Canada.

The Globe and Mail was initially known as The Globe and it was founded by George Brown in 1844. In the early years, this newspaper has weekly editions for his Reform Party. Soon The Globe was circulated on a comparatively larger scale, targeting a huge number of readers. From 1850 onwards, it came out as a daily newspaper. In 1936, The Mail and Empire merged with The Globe and henceforth; the newspaper came to be known as The Globe and Mail.

b) La Presse: This newspaper is published in French and is circulated on a daily basis. William Edmond Blumhart founded la Presse in the year 1884 and its responsibility was later taken up by Treffle Berthiaume in 1889. Presently La Presse is owned by Groupe Gesca. Now it is published in Montreal in Quebec province in Canada.

La Presse is widely circulated French daily, which targets middle class readership. This newspaper covers many sections including sports, arts and various other thematic sections. The Saturday edition of La Presse consists more than 10 sections for its readers.

c) The Toronto Sun: This is a daily tabloid published in English from Toronto. This tabloid is mainly popular for one of its features called Sunshine Girl. The Toronto Sun came out first on November 1 in 1971. The model of The Toronto Sun is based on the British tabloid journalism and it also followed the name of a popular British newspaper The Sun, which is published in London.

d) National Post: This national newspaper is published from Winnipeg, Canada. National Post is circulated in English language. Conrad Black first published it in the year 1998. The CanWest Global Communications is the present owner of this newspaper.

The National Post was originally founded to give a voice to the conservatives of Canada. Black followed the popular existing newspaper Financial Post when he published National Post. For publications outside Toronto, this paper was designed following the national newspaper chain.

e) Le Journal de Montreal: This newspaper is published in French language from Montreal on a daily basis. Pierre Peladeau first published Le Journal de Montreal in 1964. Presently the paper is owned by the Sun Media.

f) Vancouver Sun: This daily tabloid is published from Vancouver. This paper was first published in British Columbia in 1912. Presently the Pacific Newspaper Group publishes the Vancouver Sun.

g) The Gazette: This daily newspaper is published in English from Montreal. It is often referred as the Montreal Gazette. Among the other newspapers published from Montreal, this is the only one that is published in English. The present paper descended from La Gazette de Montreal, which was originally a paper in French. Later it was published in dual languages of French and English. Finally, it turned to English daily.

The Southam newspaper chain took over The Gazette in 1968. Later in 1996, the Conrad Black’s Hollinger Inc bought Southam papers. This newspaper chain along with The Gazette was resold to Canwest Global Communications Corp in 2000.

h) The Toronto Star: This national broadsheet is published daily from Toronto. Among other Canadian newspapers, The Toronto Star is considered to have the highest circulation. This paper is circulated in the Ontario province of Canada. The Toronto Star is owned by the Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd.

The newspaper was originally known as The Evening Star and then later it was known as The Toronto Daily Star. It came out for the first time in 1892. The paper did extremely well under Joseph Atkinson – the editor of the paper from 1899 to 1948.

i) Maclean's: This is a national news magazine published on a weekly basis. Lt. Col. John Bayne Maclean founded this magazine in 1905. Initially it was a pocket sized digest where different articles from periodicals of Britain, America and Canada were collected.
