23 Mar 2011Bringing the World to Canada

The 2011 National Metropolis Conference will focus on the role of immigration in connecting Canada with the rest of the world. The conference will include six plenary panels with distinguished speakers and over one hundred workshop and roundtable sessions on a wide variety of topics related to immigration and cultural diversity. We anticipate that approximately one thousand participants, drawn mainly from Canada but a significant number of international participants is also expected.

A recent report by Statistics Canada projects that, by 2031, at least one in four Canadians will have been born in another country. With this remarkable feature of our society as a backdrop, the conference will discuss the scale and nature of Canada's immigration system and the policies and practices that have emerged to foster the socio-economic inclusion of new Canadians. Immigration and emigration are transforming the populations of most countries, and in this conference we will consider the place of Canada in this global process by asking speakers from elsewhere in the world to explain the migration and integration dynamics of their regions, thereby allowing us to understand better the effects of these trends on Canada.

05 Oct 2010Labour Migration Project for West Africans
Colombia and Guatemala - In line with the AENEAS 2006 Labour Migration Project for West Africa (LAMIWA), IOM is organizing a study tour on circular migration in order to meet the overall objective of the project of “Facilitating a Coherent Migration Management Approach in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Libya by Promoting Legal Migration and Preventing Further Irregular Migration”.

The objective of the study tour is for a combination of high-level political and mid-level technical government officials from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Libya to gain knowledge of the lessons learned, good practices, and processes associated with the highly successful circular migration schemes implemented between Guatemala and Canada as well as Colombia and Spain with a view to potentially implementing circular migration schemes in the countries involved in this project. The study tour will also provide the government officials with the opportunity to acquire firsthand information through direct interaction with some of the beneficiaries of the scheme and their families.

04 Mar 2010Cultural Bridges in Germany Conference
"Germany and the World" is an international conference that will take place from 4th – 6th March 2010 in Berlin. The goal of the conference is to explore and assess Germany's policies on, and approach towards, immigration and integration into Germany the EU and worldwide. Historically these two issues are of fundamental significance as Germany looks to sustain and grow its economy and foster stronger relations between its cultural minorities, as well as to become a prominent player in the international arena. The event will then move to reflect on the influence of these issues on Germany's image in the eyes of its citizens and the international community.

Program Background

There is a general consensus amongst German politicians and leading opinion-makers that Germany is now a country of immigration. The combination of a low birth rate, an increasing life expectancy, and a growing manufacturing industry has dictated that the country is increasingly reliant on the influx of skilled labor from abroad to support its economy. Whilst Germany has few problems attracting such immigrants, there remain unanswered questions concerning the ability of German society to absorb and integrate immigrant communities. As Chancellor Merkel's comments in October 2010 highlighted, the attempt so far can, for some, be described as a 'failure'. The lack of integration of the German-Turkish community, 3.5 million strong, points to the need for a new strategy.

In recognition of Germany's unique position and the importance of Germany's immigration and integration policies to its long-term economic success, the ICD will hold "Germany and the World: an International Conference on Immigration, Integration, and Germany's National Image". To ensure a thorough analysis, an interdisciplinary range of speakers will be drawn from the fields of politics, diplomacy, culture, civil society, and academia, from across Germany and the wider international community.
