Highly Skilled Migrant Programme

The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme closed to new applicants in February 2008.

If you intend to come to the UK with the intention of work and are outside the European Economic Area or are under a different visa in the UK, you may now qualify for the Tier 1 General Visa, which is also a Points-Based System Visa and has directly replaced the HSMP.

Tier 1 Visas
Since the changes that took place on the 29th of February 2008, all individuals who require an extension on their HSMP will now need to submit their application under the Tier 1 General Visa. The Tier 1 Visa is one of the five tier immigration system which was put in place by the government between 2008 and 2009. The Tier 1 General Visa is a direct replacement for the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme and is issued in four different categories:

» General
» Post study work
» Entrepreneur
» Investor
