New Zealand's labour market is currently facing one of the most significant skills shortages across a variety of employment sectors. The supply of both skilled and unskilled jobs is greater than it has been for a long time and therefore there are currently some very good opportunities for migrants in New Zealand.
If one is looking for a suitable job in New Zealand, he/she can register with an employment agency, search for vacancies on net and newspapers.
Newspapers
All the major daily newspapers have a Situations Vacant section that advertises job vacancies.
Wednesday and Saturday editions typically have the largest number of classifieds, however the NZ Herald also has a major employment section on a Monday.
Recruitment Agencies
After arriving in New Zealand it would be a good idea to register with different employment agencies. Jobseekers can find details of employment agencies under Employment Agencies or Personnel Consultants in the 'yellow pages' section of your telephone directory. Many employment agencies have websites which advertise vacancies. By registering with more than one agency jobseekers can increase their chances of finding work. In almost all cases recruitment agencies provide their service for free.
Searching the Internet for Jobs
There are a number of New Zealand based websites that post job vacancies from different employers across the country. Job seekers can register with these sites and also apply for relevant jobs online. They can also subscribe for job alerts, which will be sent to them via emails.
Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ)
The New Zealand Government's social security agency, Work and Income, provides free job-seeking services for unemployed residents.
WINZ can assist unemployed New Zealand residents with all aspects of finding a job, including job search preparation, careers advice, and support once a jobseeker gets a job. WINZ offices are throughout many city suburbs and major country centres.
Qualifications and Skills
The job training market is competitive and some employers may not recognise overseas qualifications and training.
If your qualifications are not recognised, jobseekers may have to consider extra study or retraining to get the job they want.
Some occupations have special requirements. This may include registration or licensing with a government authority and/or membership of a professional or industry association.
