The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) is specifically designed to enable young people to come to the UK for temporary employment opportunities and as a cultural exchange with participating countries. The countries that are included in the Youth Mobility Scheme are:
- Australia
- Canada
- Japan
- New Zealand
- Monaco
Nationals of these countries can come to the UK to participate in the scheme with their national government acting as their sponsor. British overseas citizens and nationals of British overseas territories can also apply under the YMS without requiring a sponsor.
Eligibility Requirements
Foreign nationals who wish to come to the UK to participate in the YMS need to score a minimum of 50 points in the following categories of the Points Based System:
Sponsorship - Government sponsorship by their home country will entitle applicants to 30 points.
Age - Must be between 18 to 30 years old to be awarded 10 points.
Maintenance - Applicants should have at least £1600 to be awarded 10 points.
This ensures they are able to support themselves financially during their stay in the UK. The amount must be held in the applicant’s personal bank account by the date of their entry clearance application.
Benefits
Foreign nationals coming to UK under the YMS are entitled to the following benefits during their stay:
- Live and work in the UK.
- Granted with 2 years stay in the UK. However, no subsequent grant is permitted under this category for a candidate.
- The freedom to undertake any type of employment throughout their stay in the UK.
- Permitted to engage in privately funded studies, voluntary work and au pair placements.
Restrictions
YMS candidates are under the following restrictions:
Must not have previously entered or spent time in the UK on a Working Holiday Maker visa or as a Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) temporary migrant.
Have sufficient funds to support themselves without recourse to public funds whilst in the UK.
Not permitted to set up their own business, work in professional sports or work as a trainee doctor.
